Club Management Focus: Summer 2018

White & Blue Books for 2018

The updates to the White Book for 2018 have been made available by the Laws & Ethics Committee.

The White Book is primarily aimed at tournament directors and organisers. While it is only official for events run by the EBU, it is hoped that a far wider audience will find it useful - many clubs and counties use it as their default for situations where they have no explicit regulations. It contains advice for players, general regulations, regulations on scoring, advice for Tournament Directors and Appeals Committee members, and the EBU interpretations of bridge laws.

The significant change for TDs and players for 2018 is the increase in procedural and disciplinary penalties - 25% top/6IMP/1VP and 50% top/12 IMP/2 VP (though of course, for players, this only affects them if they fail to follow procedure or behave badly!). Other changes include updates relating to the new laws of bridge from 2017, and changing interpretations by the Laws & Ethics Committee.

  • White Book; A summary of the changes from 2017 to 2018 is available here.

The new White Book applies to all events held on or after 1st August 2018.

The Blue Book is the EBU’s book of permitted agreements. It is unchanged from the 2017 version.

If you have any queries on the content of any of the books please contact Robin Barker, the Deputy Chief TD - robin@ebu.co.uk.
