Seniors Congress

7th – 9th December 2021, RealBridge

The Championship Pairs is a two-day event – the qualifying stage on Tuesday, and the ‘A’ and ‘B’ finals on Wednesday, each stage comprising two sessions. The top 14 pairs from the qualifying stage play in the ‘A’ final, the next 14 pairs play in the ‘B’ final, and non-qualifiers play in the Swiss Pairs. There is no carry-forward from the qualifying stage to the finals.

The Swiss Pairs Championship is a two session event, with a total of nine 6-board matches and is open to pairs eliminated from the Championship Pairs at the end of Tuesday evening, and to players joining the congress on Wednesday. The Swiss Teams comprises seven 7-board matches with a short break after three matches.

Please note: The WBF - and consequently the EBL and Bridge Great Britain - have adjusted their criteria for eligibility for Seniors events. The EBU has therefore adjusted its criteria in response to this. Please note, therefore, that to be eligible players must have their 62nd birthday or beyond during the calendar year (January-December) of the event - i.e. entrants must be born in 1959 or earlier. See here for further details.

Congress Prices

The prices for our online congresses and competitions are significantly lower than they would have been face to face (about 20% less), but reflect the fact that green-pointed events always attract a premium.

We have been working hard to keep bridge going over the last 18 months, but with the pandemic still affecting everything, we also need to work hard to keep the EBU going financially. Despite taking advantage of all government support that has been available, making a number of staff redundant and cutting costs everywhere we can, we will still be using our reserves at an unsustainable rate. With the furlough scheme coming to an end shortly this will only get worse.

Competitions are one way of raising the money necessary for the EBU's survival and we will be following this pricing strategy for all our online congresses and major competitions.
